Saturday 9th. Said goodbye to Mireille and took off with no real plan as the weather was misty and damp. Stopped for a look around a small walled town called Wangen then went on to Metz where the aire/car park was packed full of motorhomes and cars. Not a nice spot so after a brief look, and with the weather improving dramatically, we went on towards Verdun and an aire at Dun sur Meuse which was superb. Alongside the canal, incredibly quiet and electric available, together with a shower and toilet in a small block just a few yards away. Cycled around a little before dark and had a drink in a bar just up on the bridge from the aire where it was warm enough to sit outside.

Sunday 10th. Into Verdun for a look at the war memorials for the most part as the rest of the town was pretty dirty and rough looking. On our return to Dun we detoured to Douaumont Fort, memorial and cemetery, where over 300,000 French and similar numbers of Germans plus English and Canadians lost their lives.

Took the afternoon as an opportunity to do nothing much as it was such a lovely sunny day and such a beautiful place just to be. Harry went cycling down the opposite side of the river and had a great time watching the birds, the fishermen and taking photos

Monday 11th. Filled, emptied and had a biscuit exchange with a lovely couple from Northern Belgium, checked out another aire just along at Stenay and partook of our breakfast at Abbey D'Orval just inside Belgium At Florenville we again did a little grocery shopping then explored a little and found a look out area beside the Tourist Office and Church. Incredible view once again and stopped just outside with a great overview of a village called Chassepierre for lunch.

A photo stop later prompted a couple from Northern Belgium to tell us of an aire just up the road that they had used. It was below a village called Heubeumont which had semi restored ruins of a fortification dating to the 13th C. It would have been a pleasant place to stay but decisions had been taken to re-visit Montherme to enjoy the sanglier (Wild Boar) once again. A brief pause near Zatrou by the river and a coffee stop at Rochehaut with stunning views again, followed by fuel at Charriere, eventually brought us down to the river again at Montherme. Not so busy this time but the food was just as good and the restaurant was busier.

Along the Meuse and into Belgium
